Around 80% of the potable water for Kumasi and its surrounding areas is provided by the Barekese Dam, a dam on the Ofin River that supports the city’s primary water treatment facility in Ghana’s Ashanti Region. The Ghana Water Company manages its operations.

Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president, constructed the dam. With the intention of giving the residents of Kumasi access to both water and electricity, construction began in 1965 and was finished in June of 1969.
