Upper West Region

The Wechiau Hippo Sanctuary, a community protected area is located at the extreme north-western corner of the Upper West Region of Ghana. It consists of a 24.8 miles stretch down the length of the Black Volta River which forms the Region’s western boundary with Burkina Faso.
The stretch forms the habitat of some hippopotamuses and other animals including birds. A river safari on the Black Volta in a paddling canoe increases the possibility of seeing the hippopotamus. The sanctuary is about eight 4.9 miles away from the Wechiau community and the means of transportation is either on a motor-bike or car in different weather conditions.
